Why do pro basketball players chew gum whilst playing?

I'd be scared that they might be going up for a dunk and get slapped in the face and choke on the gum... do they just swallow the gum? Where do they hide it in their mouth?

Why do pro basketball players chew gum whilst playing?nba trade rumors

When breathing open-mouthed for several hours, the mouth becomes dry and parched...and thirst develops. Chewing gum works the salivary glands

and stimulates the production of spit...keeping the mouth moist.

Why do pro basketball players chew gum whilst playing?nba standings ,nba teams

I never really knew they chewed while playing.I wouldn't chew coz you can bite your tongue or something.
i dont know about pro ball, but i play for my highschool, and we all chew gum. I put it in the side of my mouth... it helps keep my mouth moist i guess, and i have something to chew on when i get "pumped"....make sense? haha
Maybe to keep from having a dry mouth they chew gum. They are moving a lot and only get a drink when there is a timeout
Because cookies get crumbs all over the floor.
c'mon...they do it to look cool. of course, mj was the first bball player that i remember seeing chewing gum while playing. so just like verything else he does...everyone else wants to be like mike.
i agree with heh8me2. it is probably because they can't drink while playing so that is how they keep there mouths moist and not all dry so they can keep playing. they probably put the gum to the side of there mouth and keep it there so they won't swallow it.

What do you think for a 19 year college basketball player to go pro?

Good luck

What do you think for a 19 yearcollegebasketball player to go pro?nba rules ,nba teams

Gee, that is kinda hard to say. 19 is young to be faced with such an adult lifestyle that the NBA brings.

Hopefully this 19 year old, if given the opportunity to go pro, will still manage to get hiscollegedegree.
Depends on the player. If he has a chance to go high in the draft and make a decent signing bonus, it might be beneficial to make the jump. However, if he's not guaranteed a contract, I'd stay in school and work on my game there.
he should finish school. all it takes is one bad injury to end his career and then what does he do?
If your good enough...go pro. College after you retire.
it depends on the situation. Education is important but when all of the scouts have you to be NBA ready, then you must go. The risk is too much staying and playing basketball in college. Sometimes it is best to make that jump to the NBA after your freshman year.

Most players make the wrong decision though. They jump to the NBA draft due to stupid opinions when they are not ready and ruin everything.
simple YES you go tocollegeso you can make good money. after one year in the nba and you get hurt then you go to college. no should ever through away a good job!
Let's start by losing the reference to irrelevant attributes a) age and b) very smart student. Neither is relevant to the decision of whether to accept a job (start a career). What matters is that the person is of legal working age in this country, 16 at the moment, and the level of preparation to meet the demands of the career.

The relevant question must be asked by the employer and the potential employee. I'll ask from the employer point of view for convenience, the potential player must prepare themselves with evidence why they believe they are ready.

1) is the person ready to do the work

2) can the person handle the demands outside of the job but associated with the environment? (e.g. travel, women in hotels, sudden influx of cash and new found demands from family and friends, TV commercials for the league/team, community service)

3) does the person have the personality to accept disappointment (losses, bad interviews, name calling by fans/teammates, etc.) and then make improvements in personal skills, relationship with teammates, relationship with coaches, relationships with other team officials

Pass these test, then start your career. If you can't pass these test, go find a place to develop all these skills. If you start down the path, and then realize this career is not for you, go find an alternative.

Every person has the same types of questions to debate no matter if the potential career is sports, music, accountancy, lawyer etc.

The relevant question remains: are you prepared for the career?

If the answer is not yet, finish the preparation process

If the answer is yes, apply for the job

If the answer is I thought I was, but I now realize its not for me, then find a new career.
If he can make it, go pro. There's no question here. The ability to play at that level is only temporary- and a broken foot in your firstcollegepractice can end it all. Everyone knows and recognizes the greats who play in the league for 10 years. What not many realize is that 95% of all pro athletes for any sport only play for one or two years.

Your education however, you can always go back for... and after a few seasons with the big boys, you can also afford it!
if he has experience in basketball why not, i mean look at kobe, garnett, and lebron, i thing 19 yearcollegekid can play in the pro.
I think he should wait and get an education before going pro.
Go to school. Anybody serious about wanting to be the best in the NBA MUST go tocollegefirst. The education recieved there is not just secular, but it is a chance to grow and mature. Look at the players in the NBA who didn't go to college. Some say "Kobe is so great". That is bull. He is a selfish, anti-team player. He is the perfect example of why everyone wanting to go to the NBA should go tocollegefirst. If he would have, he would still be winning titles rather than shooting bricks by himself against real TEAMS. The only reason he won was because of Shaq. Shaq leaves and Kobe's Lakers go to pot. He is a disgrace to every form of basketball (except one-on-one play). Bottom line: GO TO COLLEGE! LEARN TO PLAY AS A TEAM!

Will St. Louis ever get a pro basketball team again?

Will St. Louis ever get a pro basketball team again?nba video

It's possible, I'll bet it will happen within the next 5 to 10 years...I think David Stern would like to see 36 teams (six in each division), so I would look for 6 more expansion teams in the next 10 years. St. Louis is an obvious choice for one, Oklahoma City is also, Las Vegas maybe, Santa Fe, Kansas City, and maybe Cincinnati or Louisville could all have a shot at a pro team by then...you don't necessarily need to have a team change cities to St. Louis...maybe they'll merge with the ABA again and your Saint Louis Stunners can be an NBA team!!

Collage basketball vs pro basketball?

which too you is more entertaining and why

Collage basketball vs pro basketball?nba 2k8

COLLEGE!!! (go UCLA!) I LOVecollegebasketball. the reason whycollegeis soooo much better, is that first of all, there are more teams, which makescollegevery entertaining to see who wil make it to te ncaa tourny. second, in college, they push te ball up the court more than they do in the nba. the reason for this is because people like to see more transition points. third, the ncaa tourny is the perfect part of any sport! you have to go undefeated for te last few games in order to win the championship, whereas in te nba you could lose 2 games in te playoffs and still win teh championship. it just doesnt excite people to see teams lose 2-3 games in te playoffs and still go ahead to win te championship. in college, if you lose one game in the tourny, then better luck next season! GO BRUINS! (currently ranked #1!)

Collage basketball vs pro basketball?nba mvp ,nba teams

college, march madness is the greatest sporting event, pro has gotten depressing, players can't hit an open jump shot
College basketball.

It is a totally different game these days in the NBA, everyone is overpaid and worried about nothing but personal accolades, and that shows in the way the game is now played.

College meanwhile has changed very little. It is a league full of kids that still need to prove themselves as NBA caliber players, coach's actually control the teams, and the players work together as a team in order to meet one goal, a championship. Much more exciting too watch than the NBA where someone like Iverson can play PG, score 60 points, get 2 assists and watch his team lose by 30 all at the same time.
I thinkcollegebasketball is much more entertaining. College players want to win all the time and they always try hard. Pros sometimes get lazy and take plays off, because it doesnt really matter to them. But forcollegeplayers it matters alot, because there not getting paid millions of dollars. Incollegethe games are also more competitive, and they play defense.
pros thats where all the money is lol but i would go to thecollegeto be the young gold digger on the next pro you know to trap him and have his baby lol
College Basketball is way more entertaining if you are a die hard bball fan because of upsets GW Shots and the NCAA Tournament
Man, this is a tough question. I'm gonna go with College Basketball over the NBA, but it is a very close vote! I likecollegebasketball because the players seem to play harder because they're trying to earn their way to the next level, and the fans seem to be a little crazier. But then again, I am a lakers fan and Kobe is the best player I've ever seen, and he plays hard all the time, and Lakers fans are wild. However I give the slight edge in entertainment value tocollegebasketball. By the way, GO BUCKS, national champs in football and basketball!
College basketball is far more entertaining. I think the pace is faster, the skill is not that far behind, and the guys play every play.

I used to be a big NBA fan (Go Cavs!), but really don't watch it much anymore because I am so sick of watching guys stand around, take plays off, and generally just don't put their hearts out there 110% the whole game...

There are exceptions to that, but in general, it's just not there.

I do really enjoy the ABA games (minor league basketball). I went to the championship game in Rochester last year, and it was really entertaining.

What is a three second defensive penalty in pro basketball??

It is when a defensive player stays in the paint not guarding a person for more than 3 seconds. It results in a technical foul and a free throw awarded to the other team. Here's the actual rule from the NBA rules website.

Section VII鈥擠efensive Three-

Second Rule

a. The count starts when the offensive

team is in control of the ball in the

frontcourt.

b. Any defensive player, who is

positioned in the 16-foot lane or the

area extending 4 feet past the lane

endline, must be actively guarding an

opponent within three seconds.Actively

guarding means being within arms

length of an offensive player and in a

guarding position.

c. Any defensive player may play any

offensive player.The defenders may

double-team any player.

d. The defensive three-second count is

suspended when: (1) a player is in the

act of shooting, (2) there is a loss of

team control, (3) the defender is actively

guarding an opponent, (4) the defender

completely clears the 16-foot lane or

(5) it is imminent the defender will

become legal.

e. If the defender is guarding the player

with the ball, he may be located in the

16-foot lane.This defender is not

required to be in an actively

guarding/arms distance position. If

another defender actively guards the

player with the ball, the original

defender must actively guard an

opponent or exit the 16-foot lane. Once

the offensive player passes the ball, the

defender must actively guard an

opponent or exit the 16-foot lane.

PENALTY:A technical foul shall be

assessed.The offensive team retains

possession on the sideline at the free

throw line extended nearest the point

of interruption.The shot clock shall

remain the same as when play was

interrupted or reset to 14 seconds,

whichever is greater.

If a violation is whistled during a

successful field goal attempt, the

violation shall be ignored and play shall

resume as after any successful basket.

I personally think that it's become less exciting. The constant whistle stoppage of play has made watching games rather tiresome.
Wow, R U watching RERUNS??????? HIGH? SMOKING MOTA?

Yes, it is getting more exciting. There are more and more superstars developing in the league, and players seem to be trying harder than they used to.
Yes, because of the rule changes against contact on the perimeter.
Hard to say. I like the way Phoenix plays but the Heat won it under the old, clear the floor and let one guy go to the hoop. Not good. Happy for Payton to get his ring being a Soops fan but let's see more teams play like Phoenix and then get back to me.

What's up Daniel,

First this is America so you can pretty much sue for anything- so could a player do that probably.

i think the player would have a hard time winning the case because it's an occupational hazard and he would have to prove that the player who dunked the ball "pre-meditated the whole thing".

There would be plenty of "visual evidence" and witnesses without a doubt.

i imagine that the league would step-in and that's why there is a player's association who would make sure that player got compensated and taken care of most likely.

Also a lot of players take out insurance policies on themselves (even kids incollegein case they get hurt before they sign a multi-million dollar contract)... so thinking this would most likely be the case...

Hope that helps. Kindly,

Nickster
usually when you play sports professionally you wave all rights for suing another player or the club you play for in case of injury, and you take complete responsibility for anything that happens while you play. usually those guys have special types of insurance that protects them from things like that.
Yeah, I would think he could. I'm not a lawyer so I'm not positive lol.

I don't think that will be a problem - your difficulty will be with the university with which you're studying. Will they allow you to travel overseas? Does anyone have knowledge about American Pro Basketball???

I have 3 questions:

Question #1

Is the WNBA still active and around, or

has it failed? If it hasn't failed, and is

still functioning as a commercial entity,

why doesn't it have the same

exposure as far as games shown,

and ESPN highlights, as NBA

basketball? Because it's

very unpopular??

Question #2

Why is the NBA so screwed

up??

Why do they call their

Season ending championship,

a World title, when at best

it's a Professional National

title, and at worse, a league

championship? And no, just

because they have players from

around the world, doesn't mean

their League championship is a

World title.

Question #2-B

Why can't the NBA make

its team brand names make

sense?

Are there any Timberwolves

in Minnesota?

Is there any Jazz in Utah?

What do Nuggets have to

do with Denver?

Does anyone have knowledge about American Pro Basketball???nba 07

answer to question #1 is yes they are still in business and still very much competitive but not on the business and commercial end. attendances has been dropping the past few years for wnba games and it has hurt the league more than anything else.

but no they have no plans of wrapping it up and shutting it down, in fact? i heard they are looking to expand the league with 2 more teams?!.

answer to question #2 is the title of "world champions" has been used for the nba first because basketball originated in america more than 100 years ago! and the title has stuck with the nba because we were the first official league ever established. nowadays of course there is a real world championship of basketball and the title is for whoever wins the tournament is called "world champions of basketball" world champions of the nba....here in america the main reason why its still called world champions is because we have teams in canada and canada is not part of the USA so that is the real reason why we say "nba world champs" and not "world champions of basketball" which is a different tournament.

answer to question 2-b is yes they do have wolves in minnesota, and utah has a very diverse jazz history if you researched you'd find that out and they call them denver the nuggets because of its history of gold mining and pan handling in colorado.

Does anyone have knowledge about American Pro Basketball???sports tickets ,nba teams

There's no jazz in utah.
You're one weird weird person!
1. Yes the WNBA is still functioning and operating. The WNBA doesn't get as much exposure as the NBA, because it's not as popular as the NBA.

2A. They call it the World Championship because they're the best Pro League N the World, they have the best players

2B. Alot of teams got their names because they were in different locations and moved to another city. Are because the mascot represent the city are the region.

They are called the Minnesota Timberwolves got their name because their is small amount of Timberwolves, which are native to Minnesota

There isn't any Jazz in Utah. The Jazz got their name because they started out in New Orleans where Jazz is prominent. They then moved to Utah and just kept the name for the Franchise.

The Denver Nuggets got their names because of thr history of the city. Denver was founded as a mining town for Gold. Gold so the name Denver Nuggets

It's a tough row to hoe, my dear! If you are selected, your personal life will belong to the club that hires you. You will work, physically demanding work, very hard and take real risks of injury. You will have no private life, the tabloid press will haunt you, and your sex life will take on an element of public scrutiny you may find unpleasant.

Still, if you can hack it for a few years, and play with your whole heart and most of your time for those few years, you can potentially salt away enough to start a profitable business, or even enough to simply invest in business opportunities for others and collect the profits. So while it is very demanding, and not everyone who works their tail off to get it can succeed in getting it, let alone doing well, if you don't develop a lavish lifestyle or put the money up your nose, you will have real capital to work with when you are through.

Count on being through at quite an early age, I should think. Take a look at the ages of the top players.

Nat Holman

John Beckman

Charles "Tarzan" Cooper

These weren't the first official superstars but they were the superstars of that time.

When did pro basketball start what year and was there any superstars?nba jam ,nba teams

haha...basketball was definitely not invented in 1946.

In early December 1891, Dr. James Naismith,[1] a Canadian physical education student and instructor at YMCA Training School[2] (today, Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA, sought a vigorous indoor game to keep his students occupied and at proper levels of fitness during the long New England winters to keep the students in shape.

The first official game was played in the YMCA gymnasium on January 20, 1892 with nine players and the game ended at 1-0 and the shot was made from 25 feet

Women's basketball began in 1892.

The first pro league, the National Basketball League, was formed in 1898 to protect players from exploitation and to promote a less rough game
basketball was invented in 1946, the ABA was founded by Murice Loofer in 1957. The ABA later combined with NBA to form the league today in late 60's.

Not really sure about superstars, doubt they even have that word back then, but you can probably search who is the 1st player named to the 50 greatest player.
Right after WW2, the pro league started. Mikan was the first pro superstar coz' before him the league was not as recognized yet as baseball. He was the white 7 feet behemoth, unstoppable until the very first black superstar, Russell, came %26amp; dominated basketball for a decade. If ya can buy a cd NBA at 50, it will prove what I mean. You'd enjoy it to thae max

Good times bro
The NBL (National basketball league) started in 1937, and continued until the NBA began in 1947. There were also leagues in Pennsylvania in 1910s and 20s, but as far as superstars, there's no names I can recognize as well as Mikan's.
the NBA started in 1946. the first superstar was george mikan of the minneapolis lakers. he dominated the 1950s.
George Mikan, first great Center, he played for the Lakers from the inception of the NBA in 1946 to the mid 50's i believe

What is a double double in pro basketball?nba fights

What is a double double in pro basketball?fan gear ,nba teams

It's when you score 10 or more points and get 10 or more rebounds in the same game.
when you get 10 in two catogories like 10 pts and 10 rebs, or 10 assits and 10 points. but you cant do 10 turnovers since its a negative.

a triple doulble is when you get 10 in three catagories
A double-double in basketball is when a single player accumulates double-digits in any TWO of the following categories: points, rebounds, assists, steals, or blocked shots. For example, a player with 10 points and 10 rebounds has achieved a double-double. The most common combination is points and rebounds, followed by points and assists.

A triple-double is the same criteria except it involves attaining double didgits in three of the above mentioned categories.
10 or more rebounds and 10 or more points

a tripple double is 10 or more assists 10 or more points and 10 or more rebounds
It is when a player gets ten or more of the following stats in a game: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocked shots.
when a player gets 10 of a certain stat in 2 different areas (e.g. 10 points and IO rebounds) he receives a double double
more than 10 in any 2 statistical catagorys in one game. an example would be if you scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds that would be a double double.you could get 12 points and 10 blocked shots and get a double/double.there is also the triple double which is 10 in 3 catagories. the most common triple double is 10 or more points rebounds and assists in the same game.
When you get double digits in double categories, i.e. at least 10 point, rebound, assists, steals or blocks for two of the categories.
It means you score 10 or more points and 10 or more rebounds in the same game.
A double double is when an individual player has double digit statistics in two seperate categories. Example: Detroit Pistons guard Chauncey Billups had a strong outing tonight with 21points and 14assists. OR Rasheed Wallace had a TRIPLE-DOUBLE with 10 points 10 rebounds and 10 assists.
Scoring doubles figure in two these categories...points,rebounds,assists...
It means a player scored in double figure in any of the major statistical catagories. For expample. 10 points 10 rebounds. Double-Double. 20 points, 10 assists, double-double. 20 points 10 rebounds 10 assists triple double.
If you get 10+ in two of those categories. A triple double is if you get 10+ in three of those categories. A quadruple double is if you get 10+ in four. The only person to do a quadruple double is David Robinson

1 year of additional English, math or science

2 years of social studies

Additionally there is a sliding scale for grades/SAT or ACT scores to determine eligibility. If you have a 3.55 or higher GPA, for example, you only need a 400 on your SATs, but if your GPA is 2.0 you need a 1010 or higher.

Since NBA rules pretty much require you to attendcollegefor one year, you're kind of stuck with these requirements, unless you attend a Junior College.

Realistically, unless you are stud athlete, you have little chance of making the NBA, so concentrate on your schoolwork. If your game improves to the point where you're getting scholarship offers, you can start thinking about the NBA then.

Figure out where you want to study fashion and find out what their entrance requirements are. If they have a basketball team, let the coach know you're interested in attending the school. You might even want to attend one of the school's summer camps and hope you get noticed.

just pass high school it doesn't matter what your grades are as long as you graduate... other people may tell you different but it is the truth.
a fashion designer and a ball player? wow that is a odd pareing. but no you just need to pass and play 1 year incollegeand that is it but if i was you i would try to be a fashin designer
There technically is no requirement, as long as you pass all of your classes. However, that is assuming you do end up being a fashion designer or a basketball player. As many of us can tell you, not everyone becomes what they truly wanted growing up, whether it be a rock star, or a basketball player, or a famous artist. The probability of becoming a professional basketball player is getting less and less likely every year, particularly in women's basketball. I would recommend doing your very best in school so that if you don't become either of those, you still have a great education to fall back on and live a successful like. A guy this brings to mind is Lenny Cooke, a New York City high school basketball legend. He was the same age as LeBron James, and some scouts said he was even better. He didn't put in his best effort in school because he was a "sure thing", and didn't show NBA scouts what they were looking for in workouts. He ended up going undrafted and now he has nowhere to go, since he blew off school and essentially his future. By no means am I telling you to give up on your hopes and dreams. Instead, plan for even the worst case scenario so that every situation plays out in your favor.
If you are good enough to play professional basketball, teachers will give you grades that average out to 80-90%
I don't even want to know what Kobe Bryant got in school...

I don't think you need to be smart to be in the NBA, but it would be nice, I bet Steve Nash is pretty smart.

I do think it has actually improved a bit the last coupla years after 10-15 years of decline. I actually watched a bit this year.

Who thinks pro basketball is slowly returning to old school ball?sports ,nba teams

Slowly, yes. And it would be much needed. As someone posted "all the game is missing is a few more Ray Allens" and a couple of centers who can help balance the way points are scored in between 3's and dunks.

It will take time, because the NBA is full of youngsters who come out early instead of guys who play all four years. Look at the mock draft for this year, they are all freshmen in the top 3, and one is sure to flop(Darko). Instead of becoming a better player, they listen to analyst who say their stocks can get no higher, so they leave and take up space. (Telfair?)

That alone has impacted the way the game has change because the league is younger. When the players let themselves evolve more, so will the game.
well i agree with you since some teams play it the old-fashioned way....these are some teams that play similar to the old teams....

utah jazz %26gt; same old-fashioned pick n roll that were being played by the stockton-malone duo....only now, it's the williams-boozer show....the big reason for this is that they haven't change their coach....

pheonix suns %26gt; their play doesn't look old-fashioned but it is similar to the magic johnson led-showtime lakers....they love running fastbreaks and does it with excellent passing from their point guards....

cleveland cavs %26gt; they play similar to the bulls in the jordan-era....where they rely heavily on their superstar player especially in the closing minutes....then their star players does an amazing performances that goes in the record books as one of the best ever....

detroit pistons %26gt; well the old pistons still doesn't lost their identity as bad boys who bully officials when their call didn't get in their way....they also play though defense as before....

spurs %26gt; they play something like the celtics who doesn't really have much style of play but have chemistry as their main ingredient to success....

most of the teams that don't follow the old-fashioned way and doesn't have an identity are mostly losing teams....
I'm for respecting other players on the court - and IF you are a good enough basketball player then you don't have to resort to dirty cheap shots. It's COWARDLY. A 3 year old can kick somebody or get you in the crotch.
Slowly i guess
I agree with you to an extent. The style of play is returning, thank goodness. If we can only get more pure shooters in the game it would be more old school.
hell no man they are calling cheap fouls, old school basketball is physical its the game what we play on street courts right now
Slowly - maybe? I'll believe it when i see Magic, Larry, Isiah, and company return.

hey go mtocollegeand show them what youve got.
Have a backup plan.

As with most sports, there are more who want to get in than slots available. You can be a good player as still not get to the pro level.

You may want to consider some of the minor leagues as a walk-on if you can't get drafted through the regular channels, perhaps even going overseas.
Write MJ on your shoes.
but u ain't going to lol lol
Well, at 22, you should be coming to your prime. I doubt you can find anything in north american in terms of a pro league that will pay you to play. If you're good, they would have found you. But there are MANY pro basetball leagues around the world, Europe, Asia, Latin America.

At 22, you should be finishedcollegeand you should have joined the school team. I'd look for leagues to improve. As well, try to look for various internationl club teams and send them your videos. Do you have videos of your play from games? A well presented video may land you an invitation for a try out.

Good luck and ice those joints.
Khalil, you have chances to get into teams if u play well in you college. Or you can join in a Basketball club and they will take u to many matches. When u play well there u will go for further places for more basketball games. This way you can become a basketball player.

"First team to 100 wins" is a oft-said saying in basketball. Is there any truth to it statistically?

Is there any truth to the saying "First team to 100 wins" in pro basketball?nba lottery

It is a fairly good rule of thumb. In a lot of games, the score does not get to 100 points, usually it stays in the 90's. So, if a team does get there, and gets there for first, its usually towards the very end of the 4th quarter. Of course, the exception is usually the Phoenix Suns, who can score 100 points at will, but can also give up over 100 points because they don't play defense.

What is the definition/description of "Team Rebound" in pro basketball?

A team rebound occurs when a missed shot goes out of bounds before anybody secures the rebound and your team is awarded possession. A deadball rebound occurs on a first foul shot when the ball is "dead" and the team taking the foul shots is automatically going to get another shot.

What is the definition/description of "Team Rebound" in pro basketball?nba all star game

Nevr heard of a "team rebound" in basketball....

What is the definition/description of "Team Rebound" in pro basketball?knicks ,nba teams

A rebound in basketball is the act of successfully gaining possession of the basketball after a missed field goal or free throw. Rebounds in basketball are a major part in the game, as most possessions change after a missed shot. Rebounds are divided into two categories: offensive rebounds, in which the ball is recovered by the offensive side and does not change possession, and defensive rebounds, in which the defending team gain possession of the loose ball. Most rebounds are defensive because the team on defense tends to be in better position (in other words, closer to the basket) to recover missed shots. Offensive rebounds lead to another opportunity to score for the offensive team, either right away or reseting the offense.

Rebounds are credited to the first player that gains clear possession of the ball, or to a player that successful deflects the ball into the net for a score. Height, jumping ability, timing and positioning are all required for good rebounding abilities. Because height is very important, many rebounds are made by centers and power forwards. Statistics on a player's "rebounds per game" (RPG), both offensive and defensive, are often kept and are a measure of a player's effectiveness.

Dennis Rodman was considered one of the best rebounders in the NBA. He managed to lead the league in rebounding for seven straight seasons despite generally not being one of the tallest or largest players on the court. One of the skills of his rebounding was "tipping", meaning that when the ball was close enough to him to touch, but too far for him to immediately take firm grasp of it, he would use his fingers to attempt tip the ball in a very controlled fashion--either to himself, into basket for a goal, or to a particular spot on the court where one of his teammates would have the best chance to recover it.

Wilt Chamberlain led the NBA all-time in rebounds statistically, and thus is considered by some to be the best rebounder of all-time. Others debate this, as Chamberlain played in an era in which players took more shot attempts than basketball players today. Other great rebounders in the NBA are Bill Russell, Hakeem Olajuwon, Charles Barkley, Kevin Garnett, Ben Wallace.

Because fighting for a rebound can be very physical, rebounding is often regarded as part of "dirty work" or "hustle" plays.

In sports photography, what shutter speed is good for indoor pro basketball, using 800 iso?

There's no set in stone answer to this. Basically, set it as fast as you can possibly can without underexposing the picture. Set your aperture to be wide open, and increase your shutter speed until your light meter shows perfect exposure or slightly underexposed. You can usually correct for slight underexposure in post-processing, especially if you shoot in RAW, and it will allow you to make the shutter speed slightly faster. If the arena is brightly lit, it shouldn't be a big problem; if it's dim, you'll have problems. This is why pro sports photographers pay big bucks for fast telephoto lenses. You can rent one from a local camera shop if this is a one-time gig.

In sports photography, what shutter speed is good for indoor pro basketball, using 800 iso?sports tickets

I would strive for at least 1/200 (even though you should really be going faster) witha f/2.8 lens. I usually get only 1/80 in a normal high school gym with 1600 ISO with f/2.8

In sports photography, what shutter speed is good for indoor pro basketball, using 800 iso?concert tickets ,nba teams

do what even says, then visit his web site and tell him what his work is like

i think its top - topish
First: the shutter speed that will be good for indoor basketball will be the same regardless of ISO. The question is what ISO you will have to use at a given aperture to get the shutter speed you need. I would suggest that you'll need to be pushing 1600 to get the shutter speed that it will take to stop fast moving pro athletes, unless you've got some very fast glass (IE 200mm f/1.8)

You'll probably need to shoot at minimum 1/200th to stop motion. I'd go higher if you have fast enough glass to support it, and the light will allow.

EDIT: Also realize that pros are often using multiple strobes tripped wireless-ly to shoot pro hoops.
When I shoot NBA %26amp; WNBA games, I set my camera to ISO 1600 and shoot with my lenses wide open. If I had a f/2.8 lens in my arsenal, then I could drop down to ISO 800.

The basic rule of thumb is to shoot no slower than the focal length of your lens. That means, with my 75-300mm, I have to stay at 1/250 or above. When I switch camera bodies and use an 18-70mm, then I still stay at 1/250.

Anything slower usually results in a well exposed blur.

You CAN switch to a slower speed, dependent on how steady you are, for timeouts and freethrows. I've gotten some great closeups during freethrows, slowing down the shutterspeed so I could stop down and increase depth of field.

I tried using ISO 800 before, but there too many opportunities lost in a fast moving game.

Why do basketball players receive fouls?

Please explain to me...give me a little brief tutorial on the foul system in pro basketball. I went to a NBA game tonite, and it seemed that there was just one foul after another, for different reasons. I didn't want to seem completely clueless to the basketball, so I just pretended to know why. The clock kept stopping every couple of minutes for some foul or another. I was getting so impatient and anxious!!

Thanks for your help!

Why do basketball players receive fouls?nba lottery

well a foul is called because if it wasnt, then players would beat each other. A player shall not hold, push, charge into, impede the progress of an opponent by extending a hand, forearm, leg or knee or by bending the body into a position that is not normal. Contact that results in the re-routing of an opponent is a foul which must be called immediately. you can be called for:

blocking- when a collision bewtween two players is caused by the defender

charge-when a collision between two players is caused by the offensive player

elbow foul-self explanitory, foul by an elbow

fighting foul-again self explanitory, foul in a fighting way

loose ball foul- when the ball is not in a players hands and contact is made trying to get it.

punching-when you punch

pushing/hold- when you push or hold someone

flagrant foul-two types of flagrant. flagrant 1 is excessive and unnecessary. this is two free throws and the ball back to the offense. flagrant 2 is excessive unnecessary and unsports manlike. two free throws and the ball AND the player who committed the foul is ejected

moving screen- when a player sets a screen and moves, continuing to block the defender.

illegal contact- when you reach for the ball and make contact. can be called hand check or reaching foul

Why do basketball players receive fouls?nba champs ,nba teams

refs will call a foul to take a nap atleast 1minute., just that..,
Fouls keep the game under control. A foul occurs when a player reaches in and elbows, or shoves another player too hard. If there were no such thing as fouls, it would turn into a brawl almost every game!
a foul is when one player gets to physical towards another. Fouls are called on the player that initiates the contact between the two. Often happens when a player drives and attempts a dunk/layup
A foul is when a player collides with or entangles with another player. there must be some sort of physical contact. Another form a foul you can get is technical and that is for saying something vulgar and profane
A foul is called for multiple reasons.. They are basically called to keep the game from getting too violent.. each player can have up to five fouls.. when a player gets their fifth foul they are taken out of the game because basically they have five chances to tone down their aggression for the safety of the other team before sitting bench.
So it wouldn't be a warzone out there.
Clearly, you know NOTHING about basketball
if u hit a player or grab him its a foul or if you talk trash
Take your anxiety to another level:Watch a hockey game! Basketball will seem normal.
Basketball (believe it or not) is classified as a non-contact sport meaning that it is different to rugby or Gridiron and no one is allow to tackle another person.

Fouls are used to keep this rule in place. I know if you haven't got the ball, most likely the ref will not call anything but it is really to protect the players.

This is an excitement of basketball where the offensive players need to get the ball into the basket regardless of the situations and the Defensive players need to avoid fouling and forcing the offensive player to miss.

Sports is the real distraction. Get yourself a public library card and learn about art, music and culture. Improve your mind instead of wasting it watching sports.
Known as thunder sticks, they are somewhat useful to wave at free throw shooters
That's the whole purpose of it, to distract.
The stadium actually passes them out to fans.
I think that the players are too involved with playing the game to realize any distractions. and i dont think that watching sports is a waste of time!

What are the chances of becoming a pro basketball player and playing for the nba?nba mock drafts ,nba teams

Hello! I like your ambitious personality! I think you can make it there. MJ said that with devotion you can make it. Believe me.

If you do make it to the NBA, perhaps you'll have to focus on being a good point guard now. Also, to reach NBA standards and become a good shooter, coaches say that we shoot 500 to 1000 shots a day. Some excellent NBA players play from dawn to night when they're young (I can't remember if it's Magic Johnson; I read it from a book).

Don't let others pull you off-track, because they think they can't and try to affect your mentality. Just believe in yourself and show the coaches that you really want to make it.

People say it's hard but somethings aren't as hard as they seem. For example, a few days ago I bought five Duel Masters booster packs and I got a Bolmeteus Steel Dragon, the rarest and most valuable Duel Masters card printed by Wizards of the Coast. Others didn't believe they could get it, but I did-and got it.

3v3r43v3r, you can listen to Michael Bolton's "Go the Distance" or Elton John's "Measure of a Man" when you need inspiration.

All the best man!!
if you work hard and play well incollegeyou have a chance
It is very slim dude but don't feel discouraged. Work hard and keep that dream alive! Someday you might actually make it.
I think you can make it, but the reason why it's gonna be hard is because there is too much competition. I know some one who quick fast and dominates the inside, plus he's 6 "10", but he didn't reach the NBA. Don't feel discouraged. I do have some tips, If your a Gaurd focus on making plays, play with/for 50% fun 30% devotion 15%teamwork and 5% stats. Remember put your team first not you. I wish you good luck.
you have a 100% chance keep on going and ill buy you jersey
I think your good playing 3 hrs a day. Now, what you need to do is this: Make 500 jumpers before and 500 after playing. Practice your ball handling skills constantly, carry a basketball if you have to (dribble every place you can). Make sure that you work on your 'side to side' movement constantly. You want to be very fast going side to side to stop opposing point guards. Also, don't forget to join a track team (run sprints and long distance) and lift weights (medium muscle regimen) on top of all the practice I mentioned above. This should take all day after school. Oh yea...eat very healthy (high carbs, high proteins and no sugar). Drink 2 gallons of water per day. Almost forgot, listen to your coach and do this 5 days a week. Rest one day, but not on consecutive occasions and just chill out those days. On your days off, just make about 500 jumpers and 200 layups each day. Do it until the basket looks big and keep going til you reach your number.
Realistically, your chance is probably one in a million.

why coitanly! lol anyway yeah i went to 76ers games and seen dudes w/ Eagles jerseys and Eagles games where ppl wore Phillies jerseys!
no please dont when i go to a game i allways make fun of the people that wear other teams jerseys becuse you were the team jersey or no jersey at all
Well, I've been to NBA games and people don't always wear clothing supporting their team. So I'm sure that'll be all right.

GO "AGENT 0" (Gilbert Arenas)
Yes it is ok.
Girls can wear whatever they want to a pro sporting event.
The only people wearing any jerseys at all should be the people on the court. Wearing some one else's jersey is something I will never understand.
You can wear whatever you want; it is not uncommon to see football jerseys at basketball or baseball games. Say hello to Hibachi for me!
Well it wouldn't hurt, but do u like the Redskins anyway?
I would not. but if you really want to go ahead.
I don't see why not, I mean BAsketball players wanna be football players and football players wanna be basketball players.

basketball doesnt start for a while. So try to see a yankees or mets game.

I need a real basketball pro to answer this question?

BEATING DEFENSIVE PRESSURE

What do you do when a defender gets up in your grill, and pressures you with extreme body-to-body pressure? He's frustrating you, taking you out of your rhythm and ability to square up to the goal. For some players, their best basketball moves simply won't work in this situation. So most players just pass, or dribble backwards, or even worse back up on their heels and lose their ability to attack. The result is often a turnover. And this is exactly what the defense wants.

But, as Coach Torbett says, you must not show fear. “You must meet pressure with aggression.” If the defense plays you this tight, you must make him pay by driving past him, straight to the goal. The question is, how do you do it? How do you drive past a defender who won't even allow you to get into the Triple Attack Position?

I need a real basketball pro to answer this question?nba free agents

The answer lies in the Quadruple Attack Position. Your coach may not know this. That means there are 4 things you can do with the ball. The 4th thing = fake and that's the key. Shot, pass and foot fakes.

Your defender is playing ultra aggressive. Dribbling backwards does nothing except tell him that what he is doing is bothering you. You don't want to dribble EVER until he makes the first move. Make a good pass fake and watch his reaction. That means no matter how much the pressure, you MUST be facing him. If he moves a step or even leans in the direction of the fake. you dribble by him on the opposite side. Use what I call an 'explode' dribble by getting the ball out on the floor. You can take one stride legally when you dribble which is around 5-6'. Your dribble must be out past your stride by another 5-6'. Practice this. I have my students start about six feet out beyond the 3-pt arc. From there they are expected to get to the basket in just one dribble and lay it in. At first they look at me like I'm crazy. But with a little practice they find they can do it.

A good fake will at least get him off balance, then one dribble gets you past him and you go to the hole or pull up and shoot the 'J'.

You must practice your fakes (use a full length mirror for this) until they look realistic. Then he won't get close to you again. By the way, not wearing deodorant also helps you create the space you need.

when u are already using your driblle get low and protect the ball then relax your body because then the defnse relaxes then use a burst of speed to turn the corner. then when u go by them switch hands so they dont reach from behind when u attack the baskets stay under controll because u may have open teamates under the basket rady to finish with a bucket and if there good a dunk. in the triple threat position if they are forcing you in a direction go the other way and attack their lead foot because then they must turn before they can even think to run with you. use a lot of jab steps and use differnt basketball tapes rick torbert is an idiot i should say that i just dont like his methods. listen to me i played varsity as a freshman last year
That is kind of a vague question as no position or situation is specifically described.

Basketball is a team game, so there are so many options that a book could be written about this one scenario.

First, the best way to avoid this situation is never to get in this situation.

Second, playing team offense, a pass is a good way out of this situation and then run around using screens trying to rub this guy off if you want the ball back.

Second (part II), playing team offense, use a screen to rub this guy off of you.

Third, shoot a jumper over the defender and hit nothing but net. This will get his attention. I mean is the defender Superman or something.

Fourth, as the defender is so close, it should be somewhat easy for a decent basketball player to get by the defender as the offensive player can go either left or right and the defender never knows what the offensive player is going to do.

So, some times you will just have to pull up and take a jumper over the defender. If you can't do this, then either you are playing the best defender around or you haven't spent enough time practicing your personal game.

Next option is blow past this guy either to his left or his right at full speed, stop on a dime, and pull up for a mid range jumper.

Next option is blow past this guy either to his left or his right at full speed and go all of the way to the hole where you have to be good enough to get the ball in the hole over maybe some 6' 11" defender who is moving over to help out.

As part of the first option which is just to shoot the ball, I personally always liked the behind the back dribble to get the ball on whichever side you want to shoot from and shoot either a straight up jumper or a fade away jumper, but I only had to do this once or twice in a game situation.

The best shot I ever saw from the perimeter was by an extremely pressured and closely guarded Brian Winters shooting a behind the back dribble fade away three point jumper several feet behind the three point line to hit nothing but net at the buzzer to send the game either into the first overtime or second overtime where Milwaukee eventually lost in three overtimes.

Hey, if you can't do stuff like this, then you haven't done enough individual practice daily, every day for years.

Yeah, if you are the average player who does not do a lot of individual practice, then you are not going to be able to handle a situation like this.

Basketball is a team game and there are things like screens or passing the ball to one of the other 4 players on the team who will have a better opportunity to score.

I mean if you are playing the best defensive player around, you will have to do a lot of work and moving without the ball and using screens from teammates if you want to be the one who scores.

But, who says you have to be the one who tries to take every shot?

Okay, if you are playing 1 on 1, then that is different, and blowing by the guy to either take a mid range jump shot or going all of the way to the hole should be done fairly easily.

It takes a lot of individual practice time to improve a game to handle the "extreme pressure" situations, but it can be done.

Anything can be done and overcome, but it requires a lot of skill which can only be obtained from a ton of individual practice.

I do agree that you cannot and should not show fear particularly if you have practiced enough of your individual skills. Even not showing fear but having fear inside is as bad as showing fear. You have to be good enough to beat any defender, or otherwise, why even bother to walk onto a basketball court.

I definitely do not agree that you must meet pressure with aggression unless you call putting the ball in the hole aggression. You beat anything in basketball the easiest way by scoring.

Also, you do not always meet pressure with aggression. Like on a full court press, if that is ever played anymore since "The Wizard of Westwood" retired and before the advent of the "Hack a Shaq" defense, the best way to beat the pressure of a full court defense was to dribble into the strength of the full court defense in order to draw a double team as you want to attract the defensive double team in kind of a "Venus Fly Trap" manner, but the offensive player must pass to the open offensive teammate just a fraction of a second before the double team meets the original offensive player. I would call this beating pressure by suckering the defense.

Yes, in football, you must meet pressure with aggression, but not in basketball as there are so many ways to beat pressure through both poise and teamwork.
You have to sometimes lower your shoulder if the D is playing that tight. If your best move isn't working, then you haven't practiced it good enough. The truth is, there is no miracle thing to break past the pressure. It is a matter of instinct and agression.
You copied that straight from the betterbasketball website. I bet Rick Barry knows the answer. :)
first off if he is up at you face and pressuring you

he probably is grabbing and pushing you too,

you need to create space first, if they get

physical you need to use your legs, hips, elbows

to knock them off, usually as Charles Barkley

says at the beginning of the game, just give them

a real good hard elbow to the chest so they

keep away from you.

no if he is not grabbing or pushing, cross-over

or miss direction plays work well to get the

space, fake left, go right, or even if you are

shooting, double pump to get them off their feet.

Use their aggression against them.

as far as often the result being turnover, not true,

if you have good ball handling skills, and are

a physically strong player, you can dribble inside

and draw the fouls and make the shots. So do

weights, and work on your ball handling skills.

but my advice is knock them off on their behind

at the beginning so they keep their distance.

it really is about who control the game, if you

let him ride you, its all over.
This may sound easier said than done, it is all about a good first step.

Pass the ball up and demand for it back.

Receive the ball with both hands, and secure it.

Don't dribble until you gather yourself from receiving the ball and is facing the net and know where all other 8 players are.

As long as you still have your first step, you should be able to get by any tight coverage if you are a decent player.

The defense may back off because you never dribble yet to prevent this, if this is the case, do a fake shot attempt, to suck him in, then either go up to draw a foul or go by him.

You need to have hand just like George Costanza said so in Seinfeld (Although his situation is for breaking up). As long as you have not start dribbling, you have hand as the offensive player.
its kinda complicated but u gotta make him think that you are at his mercy

Play it like his defense is overwhelming and then just give a quick jab step

if the defender is that much up on you then he will go for it every time and u will make him look like a fool
Ask someone to give you a screen then drive then pop back out to the screener and let im shoot. But if you're a Gilbert Arenas, shoot behind the screener or do a running jumper or fade away shot.
Well if your a righty make sure you get low and bend ur knees then give the defender a little jab step, if he doesnt back off for righties take your left foot cross the opponets body then make sure you re left foot is in front of his left foot, which is in defense position.then turn your shouders in front of the defender and burst..once your shoulder is front of thedefender he cannot get back in position and the only way to stop you is to foul you....probally going to need to read it more then once but effective.
Pick and Roll and Ball screen is your best bet. Also, they are at the risk of getting into foul trouble if they are playing airtight. So try to initiate the contact as your last resort, but don't force it, or it will be an offensive foul.

You have to have a killer crossover if you wanna take that kind of defender one - on - one.

Like I said before, pick and roll is the best option. It worked for Malone and Stockton, and works for most teams.

triple attack is kind of a complicated strategy in pressure defense, specially man 2 man. but coupled with a pick, it can work.
yeah coach is right "you must meet presure with agression" soooo tackle.I I mean "stick" the mutha fuka with your shoulders in his chest.it works for me and i get to the basket easy.go Rockets!!!
Try to get the ball in a triple threat position. Face him. Try a fake step to create seperation. If you sell it you got him. As he recovers you can do any number of things. Fake a shot to get him to reach and then blow by him. If you are a confident shooter with the skill enough to shoot with a hand in you face, that seperation can get you the look. But the idea is to get him in a recovery position. This should be pretty easy to do since he is over playing you anyway. The harder and closer he is playing you the the faster and more dramatic his reactions have to be to keep up. And this is the advantage. I hope this helps. It should be alot easier to show you though. Remember: They can't stop me EVER. No Way, No How. This is my House!!!
whatever u do dont let him get in ur head. make him fear u. dont be intimidated. always keep the defender guessing. its very simple, if the defender is all up in ur grill and playing u tight, pull a pump fake and drive on him. dont be afraid to be physical. if he's playing loose, fake a drive and pull for the J. u can always use ur body to catch the ball (watch Kobe). once u do, bring the ball and low and be in the triple attack position. there are a wide array of moves to do: jab steps, pump fakes, crossovers. Use ur STRENGTH to drive. there are many moves: power hops, spins, etc. just watch videos of great players: michael jordan, kobe, dwyane wade, etc. good luck.
Get low protect the ball stick your head out and work on your strength and speed.

Who jumps higher on average, pro volleyball players or pro basketball players?

I've heard that volleyball players do, but I'm not sure.

And I mean vertical jump, not touch.

Basketball players, on average.

Who jumps higher on average, pro volleyball players or pro basketball players?nba rumors ,nba teams

Basketball because there are only 5 players on the Court at one time. Dividing by 5 is easier than dividing by 6 so averages are more plentiful.
Volleyball players, All The Way. No Contest.

One source says NBA players have average vertical leap of only 28." Another states most NBA players fall between 28" and 34." There have been some NBA players with awesome vertical leap like MJ, Spud Webb, Dominick Wilkins, Sean Kemp, Vince Carter and so on. These players created the stereotype that all NBA players can jump very high. However, there are not that many centers or power forwards who can jump high. These giants have standing reach of over 9 feet so they don't need to jump high to be able to dunk. They have the height and reach but not the jump.

In fact, pro basketball players have relatively short vertical jump. Athletes involved in explosive sports like football and Olympic lifting have much higher vertical leap.

Former US Olympic volleyball team member Steve Timmons had 46" of vertical jump and Cuban volleyball player Leonel Marshall is claimed to have 50" vertical. Even the top jumpers from NBA don't even come close. Kobe Bryant is one of the best jumpers in NBA and has 38." Athletes who can jump 40" or better are very rare in any sport.

This stereotype about NBA players having super vertical leap is just a myth that's statistically disproved.
i would think volleyball players..but it is a tight race... they both jump pretty high.
i wuold say vball players especailly the front row people cuz they are constantly jumping up to hit balls. thats what their position just does
A regular basketball players (No PF or C)
It depends, middle blockers probably jump higher, and outside hitters on an average. you know. but idk for sure!
VOLEYBall

represent
Volleyball players.

Their legs are trained to constant high jumps over a long period of time in order to deliver spikes. Compared to basketball players, who need momentum to make a high jump.

Also jumping is more essential in volleyball players especially those in front of the net. Basketball rely more on speed and accuracy not height and strength.
hate to say it but pro basketball players
basketball

average basketball players have 45 inch jump

vollyball averages 38 inches
Most pro basketball players can touch almost twelve feet. Outside hitters in volleyball are tought to hit over the top of the antenna to avoid a block, which is at eleven feet. Remember that basketball players are aiming for one spot every time. Volleyball players jump, hang and look at the court to see where they should hit. I'd say they are close but volleyball requires more finesse.
