Why do pro basketball players chew gum whilst playing?

I'd be scared that they might be going up for a dunk and get slapped in the face and choke on the gum... do they just swallow the gum? Where do they hide it in their mouth?

Why do pro basketball players chew gum whilst playing?nba trade rumors

When breathing open-mouthed for several hours, the mouth becomes dry and parched...and thirst develops. Chewing gum works the salivary glands

and stimulates the production of spit...keeping the mouth moist.

I never really knew they chewed while playing.I wouldn't chew coz you can bite your tongue or something.
i dont know about pro ball, but i play for my highschool, and we all chew gum. I put it in the side of my mouth... it helps keep my mouth moist i guess, and i have something to chew on when i get "pumped"....make sense? haha
Maybe to keep from having a dry mouth they chew gum. They are moving a lot and only get a drink when there is a timeout
Because cookies get crumbs all over the floor.
c'mon...they do it to look cool. of course, mj was the first bball player that i remember seeing chewing gum while playing. so just like verything else he does...everyone else wants to be like mike.
i agree with heh8me2. it is probably because they can't drink while playing so that is how they keep there mouths moist and not all dry so they can keep playing. they probably put the gum to the side of there mouth and keep it there so they won't swallow it.

What do you think for a 19 year college basketball player to go pro?

do you think he should finishcollegeor go pro.very smart student

What do you think for a 19 yearcollegebasketball player to go pro?nba 2k7

definatly an education to fall back on, in case something unforseen happens.

Good luck

What do you think for a 19 yearcollegebasketball player to go pro?nba rules ,nba teams

Gee, that is kinda hard to say. 19 is young to be faced with such an adult lifestyle that the NBA brings.

Hopefully this 19 year old, if given the opportunity to go pro, will still manage to get hiscollegedegree.
Depends on the player. If he has a chance to go high in the draft and make a decent signing bonus, it might be beneficial to make the jump. However, if he's not guaranteed a contract, I'd stay in school and work on my game there.
he should finish school. all it takes is one bad injury to end his career and then what does he do?
If your good enough...go pro. College after you retire.
it depends on the situation. Education is important but when all of the scouts have you to be NBA ready, then you must go. The risk is too much staying and playing basketball in college. Sometimes it is best to make that jump to the NBA after your freshman year.

Most players make the wrong decision though. They jump to the NBA draft due to stupid opinions when they are not ready and ruin everything.
simple YES you go tocollegeso you can make good money. after one year in the nba and you get hurt then you go to college. no should ever through away a good job!
Let's start by losing the reference to irrelevant attributes a) age and b) very smart student. Neither is relevant to the decision of whether to accept a job (start a career). What matters is that the person is of legal working age in this country, 16 at the moment, and the level of preparation to meet the demands of the career.

The relevant question must be asked by the employer and the potential employee. I'll ask from the employer point of view for convenience, the potential player must prepare themselves with evidence why they believe they are ready.

1) is the person ready to do the work

2) can the person handle the demands outside of the job but associated with the environment? (e.g. travel, women in hotels, sudden influx of cash and new found demands from family and friends, TV commercials for the league/team, community service)

3) does the person have the personality to accept disappointment (losses, bad interviews, name calling by fans/teammates, etc.) and then make improvements in personal skills, relationship with teammates, relationship with coaches, relationships with other team officials

Pass these test, then start your career. If you can't pass these test, go find a place to develop all these skills. If you start down the path, and then realize this career is not for you, go find an alternative.

Every person has the same types of questions to debate no matter if the potential career is sports, music, accountancy, lawyer etc.

The relevant question remains: are you prepared for the career?

If the answer is not yet, finish the preparation process

If the answer is yes, apply for the job

If the answer is I thought I was, but I now realize its not for me, then find a new career.
If he can make it, go pro. There's no question here. The ability to play at that level is only temporary- and a broken foot in your firstcollegepractice can end it all. Everyone knows and recognizes the greats who play in the league for 10 years. What not many realize is that 95% of all pro athletes for any sport only play for one or two years.

Your education however, you can always go back for... and after a few seasons with the big boys, you can also afford it!
if he has experience in basketball why not, i mean look at kobe, garnett, and lebron, i thing 19 yearcollegekid can play in the pro.
I think he should wait and get an education before going pro.
Go to school. Anybody serious about wanting to be the best in the NBA MUST go tocollegefirst. The education recieved there is not just secular, but it is a chance to grow and mature. Look at the players in the NBA who didn't go to college. Some say "Kobe is so great". That is bull. He is a selfish, anti-team player. He is the perfect example of why everyone wanting to go to the NBA should go tocollegefirst. If he would have, he would still be winning titles rather than shooting bricks by himself against real TEAMS. The only reason he won was because of Shaq. Shaq leaves and Kobe's Lakers go to pot. He is a disgrace to every form of basketball (except one-on-one play). Bottom line: GO TO COLLEGE! LEARN TO PLAY AS A TEAM!

Will St. Louis ever get a pro basketball team again?

If so, who would most likely be the team?

Will St. Louis ever get a pro basketball team again?nba video

It's possible, I'll bet it will happen within the next 5 to 10 years...I think David Stern would like to see 36 teams (six in each division), so I would look for 6 more expansion teams in the next 10 years. St. Louis is an obvious choice for one, Oklahoma City is also, Las Vegas maybe, Santa Fe, Kansas City, and maybe Cincinnati or Louisville could all have a shot at a pro team by then...you don't necessarily need to have a team change cities to St. Louis...maybe they'll merge with the ABA again and your Saint Louis Stunners can be an NBA team!!

No, becuase it was voted the most unsafe city in the US this year....

What is the best book ever written about pro basketball?

I am looking to read a book about pro basketball. What is the best non fiction book? What is the best fictional novel?

I have already read Foul Lines and Full Court Press

What is the best book ever written about pro basketball?nba ballers phenom

The Punch: One Night, Two Lives, and the Fight That Changed Basketball forever by John Feinstein...it's about the punch landed by Kermit Washington to Rudy Tomjonovich and the fallout afterwards.

For the Love of the Game : My Story by Michael Jordan and Mark Vancil is a great book.

I Can't Accept Not Trying: Michael Jordan on the Pursuit of Excellence by Michael Jordan, Mark Vancil, and Sandro Miller.

The Jordan Rules by Sam Smith. Talks about Jordan and his domination and the fallout of his teammates off the court and in practice.

And The Ultimate Guide to Weight Training for Basketball by Robert G. Price and Barb Greenberg is also required reading for playing good basketball.

Best fictional book is...The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh by Richard Woodley, Jaison Starkes, and Edmond Stevens which was also made into a movie with Dr. J and Stockard Channing.

Collage basketball vs pro basketball?

which too you is more entertaining and why

Collage basketball vs pro basketball?nba 2k8

COLLEGE!!! (go UCLA!) I LOVecollegebasketball. the reason whycollegeis soooo much better, is that first of all, there are more teams, which makescollegevery entertaining to see who wil make it to te ncaa tourny. second, in college, they push te ball up the court more than they do in the nba. the reason for this is because people like to see more transition points. third, the ncaa tourny is the perfect part of any sport! you have to go undefeated for te last few games in order to win the championship, whereas in te nba you could lose 2 games in te playoffs and still win teh championship. it just doesnt excite people to see teams lose 2-3 games in te playoffs and still go ahead to win te championship. in college, if you lose one game in the tourny, then better luck next season! GO BRUINS! (currently ranked #1!)

Collage basketball vs pro basketball?nba mvp ,nba teams

college, march madness is the greatest sporting event, pro has gotten depressing, players can't hit an open jump shot
College basketball.

It is a totally different game these days in the NBA, everyone is overpaid and worried about nothing but personal accolades, and that shows in the way the game is now played.

College meanwhile has changed very little. It is a league full of kids that still need to prove themselves as NBA caliber players, coach's actually control the teams, and the players work together as a team in order to meet one goal, a championship. Much more exciting too watch than the NBA where someone like Iverson can play PG, score 60 points, get 2 assists and watch his team lose by 30 all at the same time.
I thinkcollegebasketball is much more entertaining. College players want to win all the time and they always try hard. Pros sometimes get lazy and take plays off, because it doesnt really matter to them. But forcollegeplayers it matters alot, because there not getting paid millions of dollars. Incollegethe games are also more competitive, and they play defense.
pros thats where all the money is lol but i would go to thecollegeto be the young gold digger on the next pro you know to trap him and have his baby lol
College Basketball is way more entertaining if you are a die hard bball fan because of upsets GW Shots and the NCAA Tournament
Man, this is a tough question. I'm gonna go with College Basketball over the NBA, but it is a very close vote! I likecollegebasketball because the players seem to play harder because they're trying to earn their way to the next level, and the fans seem to be a little crazier. But then again, I am a lakers fan and Kobe is the best player I've ever seen, and he plays hard all the time, and Lakers fans are wild. However I give the slight edge in entertainment value tocollegebasketball. By the way, GO BUCKS, national champs in football and basketball!
College basketball is far more entertaining. I think the pace is faster, the skill is not that far behind, and the guys play every play.

I used to be a big NBA fan (Go Cavs!), but really don't watch it much anymore because I am so sick of watching guys stand around, take plays off, and generally just don't put their hearts out there 110% the whole game...

There are exceptions to that, but in general, it's just not there.

I do really enjoy the ABA games (minor league basketball). I went to the championship game in Rochester last year, and it was really entertaining.
